Welcome to a new year full of promises and possibilities.
We currently have 641 students enrolled in 25 classes. I was amazed at how quickly all our new kinders enrolled on Monday and how well they coped throughout the day. I think it was the first time I have walked through the building on a first day to find all doors open and all students in their classes. Let's hope it continues!!!
Thanks to all our parents and carers who have assisted in making this happen!
I would like to thank Excel, our new Uniform provider, for manning the shop front each day last week. The students certainly look smart and thanks to Mrs Bulluss, our Year 6 are in their special shirts from Week 1!
I am sure you may have many questions so we have organised a Parent Information Evening to be held on Wednesday, 12th February where classroom teachers and support staff will be able to give you a clearer picture for each stage. Stage Supervisors will inform you where meetings will be held.
Kinder | 4:15pm to 5pm |
Stage 1 | 5:15pm to 6pm |
Stage 2 | 6:15pm to 7pm |
Stage 3 | 7:15pm to 8pm |
We will email this newsletter 3 times each term. Please open and read as we try to give you advance warning on upcoming events and activities.
Blackwell is a busy, large school! Our public face book page is updated each Sunday night to act as a reminder of the coming week. We do have our closed stage groups that you would have been invited to join.
Once again welcome and I hope we are able to make "all your dreams come true!"
However, I am still waiting for that handsome prince to rescue me!!!
A note from the Deputy Principal
Welcome back to a great new year at Blackwell. Students have been busily getting set up in their rooms and knowing the routines of classes. Full school uniform is worn with shirts tucked in, black shoes and white socks, no jewellery. It is great to see so many students wearing correct school uniform, our new shirts adding a new look.
Just a few safety issue reminders:
- Did you know that “Until your child is 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road”. Please take note of this, especially at pick up and drop off times.
- Safety road signs are around the school perimeter. A drop off zone is just that – no parking and waiting.
- Cars need to be aware of neighbours bordering the school – Please do not park across driveways and in No Parking Zones.
- Remind your child to walk out of the gates in the afternoon.
Coming Up:
- Swim Carnival Monday, 24th February
- District Swimming Friday, 28th February
- GRIPS Leadership – Homebush Tuesday, 3rd March
- Graffiti – Year 5 – Friday, 6th March
WHY DO CHILDREN MUCK UP?
Findings from studies of aggressive children have shown that patterns of behaviour and expectations of the world are established in the home environment and are carried over into other environments such as school.
For instance, if a child expects that he will get into trouble for something or expects to be yelled at on a regular basis, he/she may pre-empt the situation by mucking up, to get it over and done with. These children often interpret people’s behaviours as being hostile when in fact, they are not, and this leads to a retaliation in the form of aggressive behaviour. Their expectations mean that they are constantly testing the limits of people’s reactions, and testing the environment for rejection.
Early experience in the homes of children at risk for developing anti-social behaviours often involves:
- Inconsistent discipline
- Punitive management
- Lack of monitoring (of the children’s whereabouts and activities.
INCREASING COMPLIANCE
We need to change the balance of a child’s tendency to blame others, deny behaviours and make excuses, by developing in each child responsibility, ownership and accountability for their behaviours and actions.
Teachers and parents can address these issues by using some of the following strategies:
- Get the child’s attention e.g. By using his or her name
- Use a firm, or slightly lower tone of voice
- Use specific, direct, unambiguous language
- Use “do” instructions, rather than “I don’t”
- Use gestures as well as speech
- Give one directive at a time, then wait for a few seconds and repeat
- Give no additional information for approx. 5 seconds.
It is essential to draw the line and maintain it. The oppositional child will consistently test you, and every time this happens, they move the line further. Every time that line moves their behaviour gets further away from your original accepted ‘norm’ and more into oppositional territory.
“If they don’t get the ‘reaction’, then the ‘action’ will reduce.
