Welcome back and as always a busy start!!
The weeks just seem to fly! Already we have had our Cross Country with congratulations to all our participants and to those that ran their personal bests.
Well done to those that have made it to the next level, notes have already been sent out for the District Cross Country.
Many thanks to those that attended our NAPLAN workshop and our May P&C Meeting. My apologies for my absences and also to my Blackwell Buddies.
NAPLAN will take place next week for all students in both Year 3 and Year 5. Please ensure all students are at school on time to ensure an easy calm start to these assessment tasks. We are still doing paper copies and have kept next Friday as a 'Catch up' for those students who may have missed one of the 4 components.
A reminder that our annual Mother's Day Stall will be held this Friday, 10th May in the hall. Volunteers are always most welcome. A THANK YOU to Anna and her fundraising team who work so hard on our behalf. All monies raised this year will go towards air conditioning the hall.
Our last practical activity area in D block Stage 2 has been completed and we are just waiting on taps to complete the refurbishment. Our next projects are to upgrade our toilets and start recarpeting our classrooms. We are hopeful that the hall toilets and kinder classrooms will be done sometime this year. Items such as these are discussed at P&C meetings so please feel free to come along and offer your suggestions. We are in the final steps of looking at our Uniform suppliers and are hoping to make a few onsite visits before a final decision is made. Many thanks to our committee members and to you for your continued support and understanding. We will inform you of a new supplier once a final decision is made. As a committee we are looking at consistent quality, supply and costing.
Congratulations to the following student Asa V from Year 6 who has been selected in the Sydney West Association Boys Touch Football Team to compete at the State Championships at Kingsway Playing Fields, St Mary’s on 20th – 22nd August 2019. Well done!

A note from the Deputy Principal
Welcome back to another busy, exciting and eventful term!
Safety of our students is of most importance here at Blackwell. Parents please remind your students to walk out of the gates in the afternoon and look both ways before crossing a road. Safety rules also state that a child 10 years and under is to hold the hand of an adult when crossing and walking across a road. We do not want to see unexpected happenings with students being hit by cars.
With this in mind, Friday, 17th May is “Walk Safely to School Day”. Mr Samuels is organising this and classes will look at this safety aspect on the day.
The best education for our students happens when parents and schools work together. In this regard, Blackwell keeps parents and carers informed of students’ progress and of school announcements. Parents and carers can expect:
- To be welcomed into our school to work together to promote student learning.
- Communication from Blackwell that is timely, polite and informative
- Professional relationships of trust, honesty and mutual respect.
- To be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted.
Staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. While our staff is in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately.
Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities. To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community, or in more serious cases, referral to NSW police.
Unacceptable behaviour may include but is not limited to:
- Aggressive or intimidating actions, such as violence, threatening gestures or physical proximity.
- Aggressive or intimidating language, including the use of obscenities, making sexist, racist or derogatory comments or using a rude tone.
- Treating members of the school community differently due to aspects such as their religion or disability.
- Inappropriate and time wasting communication.
Collaborative Respectful Communication
(School Community Charter – NSW department of Education)
Woolies Earn and Learn is back! We have participated in this community drive over the past few years at Blackwell. As a result, playground equipment has been purchased for our students. Blackwell is participating again this year so let’s shop at Woolies and earn as many stickers as we can get to help support the purchase of equipment for our children. Stickers are returned to the school Office.

Blackwell Public School will be entering the Premier’s Spelling Bee again this year.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee (open to Stage 2 and Stage 3 students) was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage in spelling. The program includes activities to encourage all students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills.
Words for the competition are provided by Macquarie Dictionary and are divided into several categories. Junior (Year 3 & 4) and senior (Year 5 & 6) students study different word lists.
The 2019 Premier Spelling Word Lists are available online using the link below and are accessed using our school’s password. Please ask your child for the password or speak to your child’s teacher.
Thanks for registering for Woolworths Earn & Learn. It’s nearly time to start collecting stickers and earning equipment for Blackwell Public School.
Anyone can help you earn equipment
Starting Wednesday 1 May, anyone can collect stickers to support your school when they shop at Woolworths, whether they’re staff, parents or friends.
With every $10 spent* at Woolworths, one sticker is collected. These can be placed onto the Earn & Learn sticker sheets and dropped into the collection box at Blackwell Public School or your local Woolworths.
To help boost your sticker collection, look out for the range of participating products in store which will earn you double stickers.
Earn great equipment from MTA
Once again, we’re proud to be partnering with Modern Teaching Aids, Australia’s largest supplier of educational equipment. This means you can choose equipment for Blackwell Public School’s own learning needs across Arts & Craft, Digital Technologies, Maths, English, Science, Outdoor and Indoor Play and more.
