Schools are such dynamic places, ever changing and responding to society's demands and with a new Government who knows what the future holds.
Being able to cope with change makes as resilient, flexible and adaptable. Surely these are some of the keys to making us successful lifelong learners.
Congratulations to Mrs Kathi Lockley who has gained a permanent appointment to John Palmer Public School. We farewelled Kathi last week and while she misses Blackwell she seems very content at the new school.
We also farewelled Mrs Wilson who has now officially retired and purchased a new home on the Central Coast. Judith sends her love to all here at Blackwell. Her new pup, purchased from one of our families will be a constant reminder of her 10 happy years spent here.
We also wish Miss Bratusa all the very best on her upcoming wedding during these school holidays.
As ANZAC day falls on the Tuesday before students return for Term 2 our ANZAC service will be held this Thursday, 6th April at 10:30am in the school hall. The Dawn Service at St Mary's RSL is always a moving experience. We once again ask any students or families who wish to represent our school to meet just at the front of the RSL main door at 4.45am. An executive staff member will be in attendance. It is a great way to honour our fallen and pay our respects.
Once again please check the Term 2 calendar as the weeks are already filled with events and happenings.
The annual STePS Music Festival is set for Thursday, 10th August at the Evans Theatre, Panthers. I am sure our students are already rehearsing with dance and choir. Thanks to Mrs O'Brien for stepping into our choir teacher role and Miss Bratusa again organising our dance items.
Congratulations to all on a great start to 2023 with many positive comments about student behaviour and effort. A great team effort by all!
Enjoy the Easter break and holidays. Stay safe!
PS: I am sending each family a RAT test as COVID still lurks. Stay well!
Kind Regards
Kris Hudswell

Smart Watches
Not only do we have smart students, smart teachers and smart parents/carers and smart phones, we now have smart watches. Whilst students must hand all smart phones to the office for safe keeping every morning, smart watches can be worn provided that all other functions including photos and messaging are deactivated during the school day. This means that they are just watches! A quick search found the following:
- There is a smart watch designed specifically for children at school called Space talk smart watch which has an app called School Mode. An Apple watch has the function called School time.
As we near the end of a very busy Term 1, it is time to say “well done” to not only our students and staff but to parents and carers.
NAPLAN
Over the past week and a half, Year 3 and Year 5 students have engaged in NAPLAN testing. The NAPLAN tests provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned and how they have progressed in the last two years. This year, the tests moved to Term 1 so that students, parents and schools will hopefully receive the information earlier. The tests ran smoothly, and all students tried their hardest. It is important to remember that the NAPLAN tests are just one source of information about how your child is progressing at school. Well done to all of our Year 3 and Year 5 students!
EVERY DAY COUNTS & EVERY MINUTE MATTERS
Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.
It is a requirement that schools must record and monitor attendance and absences.
Please ensure that all student absences are reported to the school. This can be done by:
- Logging via SZAPP and add an attendance note
- Calling the school on 96705080
- Emailing the school - blackwell-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
Thank you for your assistance with this.
SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOUR CHILD IS THERE
Why it’s important:
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
At Blackwell Public School, our day of learning starts promptly at 9am each day. The first bell goes at 8.55am and by 9am, students should be settled in their classrooms, ready for learning.
Arriving even a few minutes late can result in an unsettled start to the day for that student and disrupt the rest of the class. As the tables show, a few minutes each day can also add up to be quite a significant period of missed learning over a week, a term, a year and their school life!
Congratulations to our newly elected P&C Executive team for 2023.
