Another term comes to an end and it is hard to believe we have reached half way through the year! I am sure 2020 will be remembered for many reasons, especially the impact Covid 19 has had on school life!
We will finish the term with all of our students returned and working hard.
School life will be adjusted upon our return next term with more sporting events, incursions, school photos, the canteen operating as normal, perhaps some scripture classes - our Catholic scripture teachers will not be here for the remainder of the year and with fingers crossed, our seniors are holding out for camp! We are also planning on having Peer Tutoring and Peer Support recommence.
Please check our term calendar for dates and events!!!
The Athletics Carnival will operate at school level only on 2 different days and 2 different venues. Unfortunately parents are still not able to attend functions or events but we are doing our best to provide our students with the variety of opportunities that schools offer!
Our Semester 1 reports have gone home today and give a snapshot of the work done during Covid 19. Parent /teacher interviews have been set up for early Term 3 with an online booking format.
I would like to conclude by just again stating how well everyone has managed in these difficult times. Please take care over the holidays and continue to practise social distancing and hygiene so that we will all be back together for Term 3. I do appreciate all your support and patience as we negotiate our environment.
We do indeed live in the "Lucky Country."

As holidays draw near, especially if it is cold, it is a good time to read books with your children. Parents can make a real difference in your child’s reading journey. The joy of reading a good book on a nightly basis sets the foundation for reading success and a love of reading with ease and confidence. You motivate your child to read when it is done in a safe, comfortable place. Research has shown that when parents successfully support their children’s literacy learning from an early age (even as young as a baby), everyone benefits. When teachers, parents work together to support reading and academic success, learning for children improves. Success in reading by the end of Year 2 is a predictor of academic success in later years. Language, speech, vocabulary and listening work hand in hand so your child can comprehend and understand their expanding world. Talk is the key to reading and writing success. So spare some time, have a laugh, have fun with sharing a book or two over these holidays. Let your child make the decision about the book he/she wants to read. Introduce different kinds of books – humorous books, books with beautiful illustrations, rhyming books, pop up books, electronic books, graphic novels and factual books. Your involvement and enjoyment in reading gives a message to your child that reading is great. What message do you convey to your child?
Over the next few newsletters I will include tips and suggestions on reading at home, writing and spelling.
Reading
- Establish a home reading routine. Read aloud with your child everyday. Read for 10 minutes together. Share your excitement for reading and this will be the model your child will adopt.
- The reader holds the book!
- Turn off electronic devices and give undivided attention.
- Before you read do an introduction. Keep it short – talk about the illustrations and the title; read the blurb and talk about the author, what unusual words there may be. Discuss the characters as you read through.
- If reading is stressful, move to a new location and find a time that suits you as a family. It is better to have an enjoyable 10 minutes rather than a laborious 30 minutes
- At the end of 10 minutes, ask questions such as: What was your favourite part? What did you think about the setting? What do you think will happen next? What do you like/dislike about this book?
- Encourage your child to read independently. A bedside light is a great investment. After 10 minutes of reading with you, your child can decide to continue reading independently.
- Visit the local library – make it a family ritual.
- Model what it means to be an enthusiastic reader. Talk about what you have read. Read aloud what makes you laugh and share it with the family.
Have a great holiday. I will see you next term.

CAMP
We are holding on to a glimmer of hope that our camp will still go ahead this year to Hill End. The camp is not until the end of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4 and we are hoping that bans of excursions and camps have been lifted by then. Our camp costs $230.00.
Expression of Interest Notes for the 2020 camp to Hill End went home yesterday and need to be returned by Friday 24th July.
Sports Days and GALA Days
We are hoping that as restrictions are relaxed our senior students will have the opportunities to participate in some GALA days. We will be definitely keeping a look out for these days and hopefully getting involved in as many as possible.
Absent Days
Parents please remember that if your child is away, a note to explain the absence needs to be sent into the teacher within seven days of the absent date. It is important that if your child is unwell that they stay at home.
High School
Year 6 should be receiving information about their High School choices now. If you receive High School Enrolment forms they need to be handed straight back to the High School. Over the next few weeks if you have not heard from your selected High School please contact them to find out.
