A Note from the Principal
Not sure where this term has gone? Looking back at all that has been achieved it is hard to believe that we have been able to fit so many events and activities into 10 short weeks!!!
This term has seen the completion of one of our major long term goals, the airconditioning on our final learning space, our hall!! $75 000 was all it took!!
Many thanks to all our wonderful community and our P&C who have worked so hard to support this goal. I hope that over the coming summer and the years to come you will enjoy the comfort of our 5 new systems. The hall is being painted over the next few days with the hall toilets completing the upgrade over the holiday break.
Kindergarten letters regrading our parent evening and orientation session went out last week. Please contact us if letters were not received or any of your details are incorrect.
NAPLAN information and results also went out last Friday to all Year 3 and Year 5 students. Congratulations to those who received just rewards for hard work and effort!
I would also like to thank Yo, from Prestige Creations who has manned our shopfront here at Blackwell. Prestige will cease to be our supplier after these holidays with Excel taking up the new contract. We have included information about their new extended shop front times in this newsletter. Welcome to Peter and Jenny.
Finally, enjoy the holiday break and stay safe when travelling. I am hoping that all our staff will return fit and healthy for what lies ahead, except Mrs Wilson who will be travelling around Eygpt for the first two weeks of Term 4!!!!!

A Message from the Deputy Principal
The end of term is almost here. Thank you for your support this term. Enjoy the holiday break and see you refreshed next term.
Reminder: Full school uniform is expected at Blackwell. Please- no hoodies, grey or coloured jackets and black shoes. Shirts are also tucked in. Year 6 shirts do not need to be tucked in. Hats are to be worn in the playground. No Hat No Play applies to this school. Students will sit under the COLA areas if there is no hat worn.
Last week Mrs Del Carmen and I attended a symposium on Learning Difficulties where we gained some wonderful ideas and tips as well as confirming that what procedures and programs that we are running here at Blackwell are research based, up to date and beneficial.
Next Term I will share some tips from articles compiled by the Learning Difficulties Coalition which organised the symposium. See their website for more information. www.ldc.org.au
HOT TIPS FOR MANAGING YOUR CHILD’S BEHAVIOUR
You’ve read books, talked to other parents, and generally tried most things .Have a look at how many of these strategies you use. Remember: the best way to change your child’s behaviour is to change your own behaviour. All the best strategies involve setting routines, rewarding the behaviour you want to encourage, avoiding confrontations and modelling the behaviour you want to see in your child.
- Emphasise the positives, and catch your child being good. Draw attention to behaviour you want, not to challenging behaviour. Comment on the behaviour: “Tim, that’s great, you already unpacked your bag!” Smiles, hugs, thumbs up, being impressed will have an impact. See it – praise it.
Test yourself: How many days this week did you praise your child?
- Make sure your child knows what the ‘right’ behaviour is, not just the wrong behaviour. Sit down and explain why a certain behaviour is a problem – for them and for you. Ask for your child’s ideas on solving a problem, and for alternative ways of behaving. For example, why is the backdoor step not a good place to leave bikes? Your child may never have stopped and thought about this. When your child misbehaves, describe what they have done and why it is unacceptable in a calm clear voice, before stating what you want them to do next.
Test yourself: Last time your child misbehaved, did you explain why it was a problem?
- Establish clear rules – but only about things worth worrying about. A messy room is irritating but not life threatening. Decide on 3 behaviours that you can’t stand any longer, sit the kids down, and set the rules as statements of how everyone must behave. No arguments – you are the adult. Set rules, for example, “Everyone in our house speaks in nice words to each other; no put downs and no swearing” “Only adults turn on the TV.” “Food comes after school bags have been unpacked and put in rooms.” Agree on one reminder then logical consequences – turning on the TV by a child means no TV at all that night. No school bags, no food.
Test yourself: Can your child tell you three main rules in your house?
